When I was very young, my mother used to tell me a simple story. At the time, it sounded like nothing more than an ordinary observation. Only years later did I realize that it contained one of the deepest lessons about love.
She would say, "Look at the cow and her calf. The cow is always watching the calf, but the calf is looking at the grass."
As a child, I thought, *Of course. That's how animals behave.* The mother watches over her baby, while the baby is fascinated by the world around it. I never questioned it.
Today, I understand that she wasn't describing animals. She was describing love.
The cow looks at the calf because her nature is to care. The calf looks at the grass because its nature is to grow. Neither is wrong. Neither is choosing against the other. Each is simply following what nature has placed within them.
That is what unconditional love is.
Unconditional love is not driven by the person who receives it. It is driven by the person who gives it. The one who loves does so because loving itself brings purpose, peace, and fulfillment. Their love is not a transaction waiting for a return. It exists because it is part of who they are.
This is why unconditional love is so difficult to understand until life places you in that position yourself.
You eventually realize that love is not something you negotiate or persuade into existence. It is not measured, compared, or controlled. It simply becomes part of your nature.
Nature quietly decides many things that reason cannot explain. It influences whom we protect, whom we sacrifice for, and whom we continue loving even when nothing comes back in return.
People often say they love someone more or someone less, but love is not something that can truly be measured. It has no ruler, no weight, and no mathematical value. It is intangible.
The person receiving unconditional love often cannot fully understand its depth because they experience only its benefits, not the instinct that created it. Likewise, the person giving that love does not consciously decide how much to give. They are not forcing themselves to love. Love simply flows from them because it has become part of their nature.
Perhaps that was my mother's lesson all along.
The cow does not watch the calf because the calf asks her to. She watches because she cannot help but care.
And the calf does not ignore the cow out of selfishness. It simply follows its own nature toward the grass.
Maybe this is one of life's quiet truths: unconditional love belongs to the giver, while freedom belongs to the receiver. Neither owes the other an explanation. Both are simply following the nature they were given.
